New Episode: Exquisite Corpse

body300This week’s episode is Exquisite Corpse.
An Exquisite Corpse was a game the Surrealists used to play where they would construct stories out of disparate sentences and pictures. During the game a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed. Which is the exact method behind the madness of Friday Funkbox!

And because corpse also refers to the human body, it’s a very apt title for this exquisite and surreal collection of songs. Special thanks to “Antonio Banderas” for his suggestion, and to Richie and Skreetch for introducing me to the band Anal Cunt many years ago.

New Episode: Spaced Out

space300This week’s theme is Spaced Out.

In honour of May 4th aka Star Wars Day, and because we did Star Wars last year (See last years episode here), and because of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShip Two made it’s first successful supersonic flight, this week we have songs about space, stars, galaxies and their exploration.

This week we start with the most famous speech about space ever, the one and only Captain Kirk, followed by a good 20 minutes of pure unadulterated space funk, starting off with the Star Wars inspired “Feel The Force” and closing off with Jamiroquai. No journey through science fiction via music would be worth listening to if it didn’t include Bowie, and a tribute to Chrissy Amphlette and MCA follow, interspersed with the Church, Dub Pistols, Flume, and the sublime remix of the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy. Then, just because it’s so utterly ridiculous, Star Trekkin’.

Theme from Star Trek
Can You Feel the Force by The Real Thing
Space Bass by Slick
Space Funk by Manzel
Dancing in Outer Space by Atmosfear
Cosmic Girl by Jamiroquai
Star Man by David Bowie
Science Fiction by the Divinyls
Across the Universe by The Beatles
Under the Milky Way by The Church
Speed of Light by Dub Pistols
Space Cadet by Flume
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Hexstatic
Intergalactic by The Beastie Boys
Star Trekkin’ by The Firm
We Are The Universe by Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse Tyson

This Week’s Theme: Space and Science Fiction

This week’s theme is Space and Science Fiction.

We come around to Star Wars Day again this May 4th, but as we did a Star Wars Episode last year, this year we’re going to spice it up a bit by widening the category and allowing all things space and sci-fi based, not just Star Wars.

So songs about space, nebula, galaxies, astronauts, spacemen, aliens, star ship travel, and sci-fi based around these themes.
