Theme for January: Summer Holidays

It’s a fucking hot January in Australia, so this month’s theme is going to be:

Summer Holidays.

Songs about summer, heat, beach, parties, holidays… maybe even throw in some references to Australia Day.

This month’s competition prize is a $20 iTunes voucher
(Aust only – sorry, I can’t give vouchers out in other countries)

To win it, submit a song title which best fits the theme in the comments below; or on the Friday Funkbox Facebook page; or add it to the Spotify Friday Funkbox  Collaborative Playlist.

The winner will be drawn randomly and announced during the podcast.

Inspirations: Solid Steel

Solid Steel is one of those radio shows which music nerds obsess over.

Playing a range of absolutely stunning music every week, DK and DJ Food and guests amaze and confound with their mixing and song selection.

My other recommendations include:
Caught in the Middle of a Three Way – Beastie Boys Paul’s Boutique cut down to samples and re-mixed whole
Coldcut meets The Orb – a mash of dub by the UK’s finest
Obey Sound and Vision – Z-Trip’s soundtrack to Shep’s UK audio visual shows
and the seminal Raiding the 21st Century by DJ Food.

Inspirations: DJ Niko Mixmas

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everybody!

DJ Riko came to my attention when I was getting into mash ups. His Christmas Mixes are pretty damn good, as he dumps the usual carols and crap, and goes right for the unusual.

Taking from all genres, and finding weird and wonderful samples from Christmas Specials, he presents a fun and funky alternative to the usual December soundtrack.

This mix from 2002 was his first, and 11 years later and he’s still kickin’ out the Xmas Jams.

Inspirations: Uneasy Listening Volume 1

As I said last post, I’m going to talk about more than just myself from now on.

In this series, creatively entitled “Inspirations”, I’m going to showcase some of the many mixes which not only inspire me to get into making a show myself, but also simply listen to music.

http://soundcloud.com/morebounce/dj-z-trip-dj-p-uneasy-listening-vol-1

DJ Z-Trip and DJ P’s Uneasy Listening Volume 1 was one of the first mixes I heard that really cemented in my mind that music genres were indeed bullshit, and that even bad music could be enjoyable when played with a good understanding of music and mixing.

The fact this was done analogue, on turnies and a drum machine, is testament to the skills of these two artist, one who has gone on to wide acclaim, and the other who’s vanished into obscurity.

Kicking it once again!

Hey Friday Funkateers!

I’m going to be revamping Friday Funkbox in Two O Fourteen!!

The first change you’ll notice is www.fridayfunkbox.com is now live! So no fuffing about with trying to remember which address is which!

Secondly, the podcast is going to be a monthly show, up on itunes and available through mixcloud. I’m working on a calendar to plan the show. I’m no longer going to be lazy, and set some time aside every month to do this properly.

I’m going to be using the FFB twitter feed and facebook to do more than just promote FFB, although it will continue to remain music focused. I’ll start posting about gigs I know about, gigs I’ve been to, and music I’ve heard / purchased.

Thanks for sticking with it, and lets make ‘Fourteen into the year of the Funk!

New Episode: Chromaesthesia

colours300

Welcome to the all new monthly Friday Funkbox!

This month’s episode is Chromaesthesia. It’s a medical term for a form of synesthesia in which nonvisual stimulation results in the experience of colour sensations. Trippy, no?

This week we start off with some lovely Ice T and red wine, move into some colourfully noisy guitars, get our dance on, take too many pills and wind up in a psychedelic spiral.

Colors by Ice T
Red Red Wine by UB40
Purple Haze by Jimmy Hendrix
Back In Black by AC/DC
White Wedding by Billy Idol
Bullet the Blue Sky by U2
Into the Black by The Chromatics
Fade To Grey by Visage
Blue Monday by New Order
Just Can’t Get Enough Purple Pills (D12 vs Depech Mode) by DJ Hellraiser
Purple and Green by Bliss
I Hear Colors (Chromaesthesia) by The Black Angels
Paint It, Black by The Rolling Stones
Yellow Submarine by The Beatles

Oh, and see the highlighted song above? That’s the winner of the iTunes Voucher!

This Month’s Theme: Colours

As we move Friday Funkbox to a monthly format, I figure it would be best to have the mix uploaded for the first week of the month. So, the theme will appear a week before.

So, the first monthly theme will be Colours. All the colours of the spectrum and in between.

Decision made! Friday Funkbox is going to a monthly format!

Ok, so I’ve made the decision to make Friday Funkbox a monthly endeavour.

There are 18 episodes in total, and that works out to be roughly one episode a month since I started this thing, so it just makes logical sense that weekly is too ambitious for the moment.

I’m going to try and get people more involved in submitting tune suggestions by offering prizes as well. These will most likely be in the form of Spotify and iTunes giftcards, but I hope to offer other prizes as well, so stay tuned for those!
